Following a second outbreak of the King's Plague the United States put themselves in a national and later even regional isolation from one another. Regional isolationism was further reinforced by newly introduced prohibition laws that allowed for each state to decide their own liquor laws, dividing the nation between wet and dry states. Inept political decisions lead to the second secession of Texas from the Union in 1930. Finally, the Great Depression was the straw that broke the Union's back and the independent American nations were born. Though the nations have gone through several permutations since their inceptions they have now reached sort of a stable form.

With the central railway system as well as interstate roads in ruins and travel hindered by the newly found boundaries, the blood of the new nations flows through the air. But wherever this life stream flows pirates are present to feed off of it.
